THREE ARRESTED OUTSIDE POST OFFICE FOR MAILBOX FISHING

On Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 0208 hours, Officer Brian Rubio checked three suspicious males standing outside the Maywood Post Office on West Pleasant Avenue. An on scene investigation revealed that the males were in possession of several stolen checks and unopened pieces of mail. An unoccupied vehicle parked a block away was determined to be used by the suspects and contained additional stolen mail and drug paraphernalia. Officers also located a string hanging from a nearby mailbox with a "fishing" device attached to it. These fishing devices are commonly placed in mailboxes and have an adhesive on them, allowing the "fisher" to remove mail from the mailbox. These "fishers" retrieve the mail hoping to find cash or checks that they can alter and deposit into accounts. They can also retrieve information used for identity theft.

The three suspects identified as, Luiggi Depena-Montero, 18, of Paterson, Cheldrid Sosa, 21, of Pateron, and Eury Cerda, 20, of New York, were arrested for theft, receiving stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The U.S. Postal Inspector's Office was notified and charged each defendant with Mailbox Fishing.

All three defendants were later released pending their future court dates.

Cheldrid Sosa, 20, Paterson

Luiggi Depena-Montero, 18, Paterson

Eury Cerda, 21, New York
