SERIAL COMMERCIAL BURGLAR ARRESTED

On September 19, 2022 at 8:58 am, the Maywood Police Department responded to an activated burglar alarm at Timely Dry Cleaners on West Pleasant Avenue. Officers discovered an open rear door at the business and contacted the owner who confirmed a burglary occurred.

Det. Shawn Patton investigated the burglary and canvassed the area, retrieving video surveillance of a suspect forcing the rear door open and entering the business. The suspect then fled in a vehicle after he activated the audible alarm. Det. Patton’s investigation subsequently identified the actor as Nicolas G. Torres, 40 of Passaic. A warrant was issued for Mr. Torres’ arrest, charging him with Burglary and Criminal Mischief. Detectives were previously familiar with Mr. Torres from an office burglary he committed in Maywood in 2018. Mr. Torres was also wanted for numerous commercial burglaries that recently occurred in Bergen and Passaic counties.

On October 10, 2022, Det. Patton and D/Sgt. William Phayre located Mr. Torres in the rear parking lot of an apartment complex in Clifton where he was taken into custody. He was transported to the Bergen County Jail where he was lodged pending a court hearing.

These charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Maywood Police Department would like to thank the Clifton and Westwood Police Departments for their assistance.
