All citizens need protection against crime. Crime is increasing at such a rapid rate that police departments across the nation, which have always been regarded as the chief protectors of the public, have realized that citizens must become more informed about what they can do to protect themselves. The primary function of the Maywood Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit is precisely that, to educate the residents of our community of the action they can take to protect themselves and their property.

The following programs were developed over the years to assist residents in keeping themselves and their homes safe.

OPERATION I.D. McGruff

Operation ID is a program in which residents may borrow an engraving tool from the police department and use it to mark their valuables for identification purposes. It also helps residents to properly inventory their personal property.

HOME AND BUSINESS SECURITY SURVEYSpaw print

It is too often true that people only think about security after they have be victimized. Keeping intruders outside your home is a major concern. Knowing how to protect your home against intrusion and considering other potential hazards are both important in crime prevention.

A Security Survey is a detailed on-site examination of your home or business an it's surrounding property to determine security weaknesses and to identify practical ways to correct them. Upon your request, a trained officer will visit you and make recommendations on such items as lighting, locks, motion detectors, windows and doors and can offer expert advice on security measures for you to take before leaving for vacation.

PROGRAMS FOR SENIORS

Senior Citizen Safe Housing Program Security Survey

The Senior Citizen Safe Housing Program Security Survey is a similar program that it funded by the State. After a security survey like the one described above is completed, it is evaluated by State personnel. Security improvements are then recommended and can be made, in most cases, free of charge.McGruff

Many programs are offered for seniors which cover such topics as personal safety, fraud awareness and the community services that are available to them.

The Maywood Police Department offers all of the programs listed above free of charge. We encourage all residents and business owners to take advantage of them. With a cooperative effort between the police and the members of the community, we can help keep Maywood safe.
