School Safety Tips...

Maywood Police Department offers some safety suggestions for parents and students.

Red_Arrow30C3.gif (101 bytes)    School Bus Passengers: Most school bus-related injuries and fatalities occur when children are approaching or leaving a school bus. Instruct your children to cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus so the bus driver sees them. Enter the roadway only if the driver signals that it is safe to cross and continue to look left for approaching cars while crossing. Teach children to stay seated on the bus, keeping head and arms inside at all times, and buckle up if safety belts are present.

Red_Arrow30C3.gif (101 bytes)    Pedestrians: Choose the safest route to school and walk it with your child prior to the first day of school until he or she is thoroughly familiar with it. Teach your children to walk on the sidewalk. If none exists, keep to the left and walk facing approaching traffic. Cross at comers or crosswalks. Always stop first, look left, right and left again for approaching traffic and keep on looking while crossing. When possible, plan your child's route so he or she will cross the major intersections protected by our crossing guards.

Red_Arrow30C3.gif (101 bytes)    Cyclists: Plan a safe bike route away from busy streets. Teach children to follow the rules of the road, riding to the right with traffic and heeding all signs and signals. New Jersey law requires cyclists under age 14 to wear approved bicycle helmets but the Police Department urges their use for all ages. Head injuries account for over 60% of bicycle-related deaths. Bike helmets are proven to reduce the risk of head injury by 85%. Traffic and Parking: With regard to traffic and parking around the schools, experience tells us that the first few weeks of school are chaotic. The best system is drop and go, if possible. Let the school staff supervise your child into the building. If you must walk your child into the building, please try and minimize the length of time your car is left in the street.

Memorial School

Parents driving to Memorial School will notice that some alterations have been made to the roadway on West Fairmount Avenue. The roadway has been widened for a "drop and go" on the south side of the street for vehicles traveling eastbound.

Under no circumstances will double parking be permitted.

If you have any questions regarding school matters, please call the appropriate school.
